Toronto Maple Leafs

The National Hockey League was formed on November 2, 1917 as a result of a meeting held at the Windsor hotel in MontrĂ©al. Present at this meeting were team owners of the National Hockey Association. The acceptance of teams into this league will be known as the original six, being the first six teams to make up the National Hockey League. Toronto’s entry in the newly formed NHL for the 1917-1918 season played its first game on December 19, 1917 against the Montreal Wanders. Over the years, the Leafs won 13 Stanley Cups in its lifetime, but have failed to win again since 1967, and the last time the Leafs made the play offs was in the 2003-2004 season.

Ninety-three years later, Thursday October 7, 2010, the Toronto Maple Leafs play their season opener against the Montreal Canadiens and won! Two days later, the Leafs played the Ottawa Senators winning 5 - 1, and this Monday they played against the Penguins, beating the 2008-2009 Stanley Cup champions 4 - 3.

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ have not started off the season this well done in 10 years and we all will be glued to the television waiting for more fights and goals in the upcoming months. Although, sometimes just watching the games on the TV or over the Internet isn’t the same as going to the actual game. If you’ve never been to a Leaf game you are missing out! And, if you don’t know anything about hockey trust me it’s worth it to attend and indulge yourself in the Toronto and Canadian tradition. Join Toronto’s passion of Leaf Nation that “Unites Us All”.

Toronto International Film Festival

Every year, in September, for 10 days the stars, filmmakers, and audiences flock to Canada for the Toronto International Film Festival. This year’s 35th annual film showcase concludes this Sunday. Citizens of Toronto and the surrounding GTA spend their time going star watching and try catching a glimpse of the films that will be talked about for the next year or even the next century. Generally there are about 300-400 films played each year at this non-competitive festival. So far, 25 films have been signed over the past 9 days of this festival.

As we are excited about the festival as the rest of North America, we have been constantly reading reviews and checking the media for updates on films as well as star sightings. So, we thought we would share some movies from the festival you can check out in the future, if you couldn’t make it to Toronto to experience the revealing of films.

As the festival comes to an end we can look forward to viewing the top 8 most talked about movies. Here are some movies you can look forward to viewing in the upcoming months:

1. The Town: Came out September 17, a theatre near you will be viewing this film. The Town is a dramatic thriller about robbers and cops, friendship and betrayal, love and hope, and escaping a past that has no future.

2. Jack Goes Boating: Opened September 17, experience this tale of love, betrayal and friendship centered around two working-class New York City couples. The film stars John Ortiz, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Amy Ryan and Philip Seymour Hoffman, with Hoffman making his feature directorial debut.

3. Easy A: Opened September 17, so go out and see it! If you haven’t already of course. Things get completely out of hand when Olive (Emma Stone) tells a little white lie that precipitates one giant rumor in this hysterically funny movie.

4. Buried: Opening September 23 in a theatre near you. This movie is one of 2010’s most talked about suspense thrillers, and stars Ryan Reynolds as Paul Conroy. Paul is a US civilian truck diver on a contract assignment in Iraq. An average family man from smalltown Michigan, Paul is just trying to earn enough money to keep food on the table back home. But when his convoy is attacked by Iraqi insurgents, he’s knocked unconscious. When Paul wakes up he’s six feet underground with only two gadgets to save him.

5. Waiting for “Superman”: Coming out September 24, 2010. Make sure you catch this controversial film out the American school system. This film is told through multiple interlocking stories – from a handful of students and their families whose futures lie in the hands of educators and reformers trying to find real and lasting solutions within a dysfunctional system.

6. 127 hours: Opening date is November 5, 2010. 127 Hours is the true story of mountain climber Aron Ralston’s (James Franco) remarkable adventure to save himself after a fallen boulder crashes on his arm and traps him in an isolated canyon in Utah.

7. Black Swan: Opening December 1, 2010. Black Swan is a psychological thriller set in the world of New York City ballet. Natalie Portman plays Nina, a featured dancer who finds herself locked in competition with a new rival at the company. This film takes a thrilling and sometimes terrifying journey through the psyche of a young ballerina whose starring role as the swan queen turns to be a part for which she becomes frighteningly perfect.

8. Last Night – As it has not been previewed yet, there is no opening date released. But, look for it in upcoming theatres. Keira Knightley and Eva Mendes join forces in this emotional and exciting film of trust, lust and deception.
